We have discovered that roseola is scary. I didn't know much about it before and am certainly glad we'll not have to deal with it again.
A couple of weeks ago, Lily spiked a fever suddenly at her babysitter's house. That morning, she had been great. No fever, n signs of feeling bad, except for a little extra whining, which is a little unusual for her. But, we chalked it up to my being home that morning, which I'm usually not. While at my doctor's appointment, I got a call from Lily's sitter that she was running a fever of 100.7, under her arm, Now, she's had a fever higher than that, so I wasn't extremely concerned at first - although the suddenness of it was a little concerning. So, we headed to the doctor. By the time we got there, her fever had actually gone down a bit and she was a happy baby, like usual and it was thought that she probably had just picked up another bad cold.
That night was another story. At about 6 or so, her temperature went as high as I've ever seen it - 103.9 - extremely scary for mommy! I put her in the tub and bathed her (it was bath night), hoping that would help her temp come down some, but after her bath it was 103.7 - really not an improvement. So we called the doctor, who told us that unless it hit 105(!!!) we could continue treating her at home. We dosed her up with Tylenol and we settled down to snuggle for awhile. Eventually, she went off to bed and made it through most of the night, with us doing some regular dosing.
Friday morning, she was doing better, but by Friday afternoon, her fever was back up and she was absolutely miserable. So, we headed back to the doctor. Again, they couldn't find anything particularly wrong, so they said to just keep treating her fever.
On Saturday, she finally seemed to be doing better! Her temperature went down below 103, finally, and she was definitely perkier. Unfortunately, that night her fever spiked to 102.8 around 3 in the morning :(. So, on Sunday, when we had planned to get together with my aunt and uncle from Texas, along with Cara, Phillip and the kiddos for an early Christmas celebration, we spent the day snuggled up with the munchkin, getting her better. Luckily, by that afternoon, her fever was down a lot and she was doing better - although still not her self - but we were able to go and meet Cara, Phillip, Caleb, Tyler, Garett and Sophie in Durham to do a quick present exchange.
Monday morning, when Lily woke up, she was pretty much covered in a fine red rash - and we discovered our culprit - roseola! We went to the doc to make sure that's what it was and yep, that was it. Thankfully, once they have it, kids are immune to it for life (woohoo!) so that, at least, is something we will not have to deal with again. The rash went away in just a couple of days and it didn't bother her a bit. We finally had our normal, happy, busy baby back :) Although we have missed all the snuggles...
