HCP Science Fair 2013

Lily's Science Fair was last Tuesday and this year, she did so much of her project on her own! It absolutely amazes me all the time how she is growing up.

She decided to do a project on egg drops. So, we did a test to see what happened when an egg drops (it breaks!) and then we went around the house and brainstormed some ideas to protect it when it was dropped. She came up with 10 ideas:

- Put the egg in a cup.
- Put the egg in plastic grocery bags.
- Wrap it in bubble wrap.
- Wrap it in paper towels.
- Put it in a couch pillow.
- Wrap it in a blanket.
- Put it in her sun hat.
- Put it in a cookie box.
- Put it in a pull-up.
- Put it in a Ziploc bag.

So, we tried out all her different protection ideas for the egg and 4 of them worked! It didn't break when it was put in the cookie box, wrapped in bubble wrap, put on the couch pillow or wrapped in the plastic grocery bags.

This year we were also asked to incorporate a Godly lesson into the science experiment, as well as the science lesson. So, we read Isaiah 41:10 and talked about how God's love is our protection when we fall, just like the bubble wrap, cookie box, pillow and plastic bags are for the egg.

She had such a fun time doing this - although, she was always disappointed when the egg DIDN'T break, instead of when it did! The more mess the better it seems :)

Isaiah 41:10: "Don't be afraid, for I am with you. Don't be discouraged, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you. I will hold you up with my victorious right hand".

Pumpkins, pumpkins, pumpkins!

Today we headed over to the Farmer's Market to pick up our pumpkins for the year! This is seriously one of my favorite times of the year - Spring and Fall really make me happy :) and the fun of decorating for fall just adds to the excitement for me.

It had actually been quite a while since we'd been to the Farmer's Market - maybe an entire year? Lily didn't remember it, so I think it may have been since we picked out our pumpkins last year. While we were there, we decided to pick up some other fresh goodies - some green beans, okra, tomatoes, apples (honeycrisp, yum!), herbs and honey - along with our pumpkins, gourds and a hay bale.

Lily Gymnastics

So, Lily tried gymnastics last year through the City of Raleigh and absolutely loved it. It was mostly tumbling, but she still had a great time. We really only have time for one "extracurricular" activity, so in January, we decided to try dance instead of gymnastics and she liked it too - but not as much as gymnastics.

We talked about it all summer and every time we asked her if she'd rather do dance or gymnastics, her answer was the same - gymnastics! So, we knew which activity we were going to try this fall :) But, instead of doing it through the city this year, we thought we'd try going through a "real" gym, so she'd be exposed to everything - bars, floor, trampoline, foam pit - all of it. And she has absolutely loved every single minute of it - well, for the most part (I'll explain a little further down). She looks forward to going every week and asks about going every other non-gymnastics day.

Her class is for an hour every week and there are about 6 other little girls in her class. Everyone seems to get along really well - except for one (this is the explanation to the comment above). There's one little girl that seems to be a little bit of a bully, for lack of a better word. The first couple of classes Lily had, she would come running to me to tell me that the little girl had pinched her or pushed her or had "hurt her". I've also seen her push other kids out of the way at the water fountain and when in line to do their skills. So, after the second class in which this happened, Lily and I had a long talk about being nice to her even when she's not nice to Lily, not sitting next to her in class and letting the teacher know when something happened. Lily didn't have class last week, but this week when we went, it was much better and she pretty much just stayed away from the girl.

Now, I'm sure that this is not the first time Lily has encountered a not so nice kid, but this was the first time I've seen it firsthand - and I've gotta say, those protective instincts really kick in when this happens to your child! Richard and I talked about if we should switch her to a new class, but we both felt like it was important for her to learn to deal with this situation, especially in a safe place like gymnastics class.

Now, we did have a make up class at another time this week and I am thinking about switching her to that class - but not for that reason. It's kind of more of a selfish reason. Besides it being later in the day, which makes it easier for me not have to rush from work to get her, this class seemed to do a lot more and Lily enjoyed the entire class. She didn't once look for me or call out to me from across the gym, which is a huge change. Now for the selfish reason...the parents of the kids in this class are so much better! They're not catty or rude to the teacher (another story for another time..), they were friendly and normal - and since I have to deal with the parents while waiting for Lily's class, I'm thinking this would be a much better environment :). So, we may end up switching her anyway!

Running?

So, those of you who know me well may remember my strong aversion to running. We are talking hating, despising and generally disliking all things having to do with running for the first 29 years and 2.5 months of my life.

However - something changed during that 3rd month of my 29th year. One weekend, I decided to take a run - lo and behold, I loved it. And we are talking falling hard for it. Sidebar: should give a shout out here to my sister Cara, who always told me one day it would just click for me. I guess what they say is true - wisdom does come with age ;-).

By the way, you should totally check out Cara's running page. She's the author at Running In Sanity at www.runninginsanity.com.

Running makes me feel good. My head is more clear, my attitude is better and I get a great workout, plus some quiet time and some personal time just to myself. And as an added benefit, I can already see the changes its making in my body - which is freaking awesome!!

So, of course, Cara talked me into running a race with her - is anyone shocked? I was not. My little sister was not. Our friend Kelly was not. Anyone that knows Cara knows that she's quite persuasive when it comes to getting something she wants - and I have to say, nothing I've done with her has ever turned out badly! So, next week, we are flying down to Disney World for the Tower of Terror 10 miler!!! I am SO excited. Not only for the race, but to get to spend a long weekend with my sister which is something I haven't done in so long. Literally, I can't remember the last time we spent time together, just the two of us. It was certainly before we both had our kiddos.

Now, I'm training for this race. I'm running miles and miles each week - last week I ran 15 miles - that just sounds insane to me! To go from never running (and never wanting to run, ever) to running over 10 miles a week is just amazing to me. And I love it.

As part of my training, Richard and I did the Rock'n Roll Half Marathon in Virginia Beach the weekend of Labor Day - actually, the race was on his birthday. We had so much fun. The energy and running with all those people - it was awesome. Richard actually ended up running the whole half and he did a fantastic job.

So, I'd advise you - if you've hated running all your life like I did, just keep giving it a shot every now and then. You never know - it might just click for you too!
6:15a, ready for our race!
