Family Beach Trip

The weekend after the 4th of July, the three of us took our first family vacation together down to Wrightsville Beach - it was so much fun! Last year we went down to the Outer Banks with the Martin side of the family, but because Lily was so little, she never had a chance to check out the sand and the waves.

We headed to our hotel, the Surf Suites, on that Thursday evening. I'd forgotten how much of an easy drive it is- we really need to get down there more often. We stopped at a great little place for dinner on our way down, the Country Kitchen in Wallace, NC. They have a great buffet, loaded with tons of good Southern food - a great way to start our trip! Once we arrived, we checked out the room and then had a little hang out and unpacking time before heading to bed. Lily had a late night - a 10:00 bedtime!

Friday morning we woke up to cloudy skies and a little bit of rain, but decided to take advantage of the cloud cover to introduce Lily to the sand and waves, since the beach was pretty much deserted. We headed down after breakfast - cooked by daddy, with Lily's moral support!

Here are some picture of her first time checking out the ocean - I think they kind of speak for themselves!

It was pretty rainy on Friday, so we had more of hang out day than anything. But we did take advantage of our proximity to the Trolly Stop to grab some yummy hot dogs for lunch. Lily tried her first hot dog ever - plain with ketchup - and loved it! She even got to have a picnic on the floor for lunch.

On Friday afternoon we finally got a break from the gloom with some nice sunshine and headed down to the beach to play! It took Lily a little while to get used to the sand, but once she did, she had a great time playing with her toys in it. We also sat in the waves together and discovered that Lily likes to sing to the ocean - it was so sweet.

On Friday evening, we headed to the Oceanic for dinner - one of my most favorite places to eat. We were lucky in that our hotel was literally right next door, so we just walked right over. They have a delicious she-crab soup, and as I'm a big fan of that particular soup, of course that's what I had. Richard got their fried shrimp and also really enjoyed it. In addition, I discovered they make a fantastic pina colada - yum!

Saturday morning was still a little cloudy, so we decided to go out for breakfast, rather than cooking in our room. We decided on the Sweet and Savory Cafe. Neither of us had eaten here before, but we were so glad we chose this spot - everything was so fresh and yummy and we really enjoyed it. After breakfast, we let Lily take her nap and then headed out to enjoy the sunshine. After a quick stop at the pool for a swim with mommy we went down to the beach for some more playtime.

A couple of hours afterward, we were chased off the beach by a big thunderstorm - which Lily did not appreciate! It continued to be rainy for the rest of that afternoon, so we hung out inside, relaxing, while watching the rain from our balcony. Although we had planned on cooking dinner in the room that evening, we decided instead to head back to the Oceanic to enjoy another good meal of seafood before we had to head back the next day.

On Sunday, we got up and got all our stuff packed to head back home. We were pretty bummed to be leaving - beach trips are always too short! After some family pictures, we checked out and headed home and we're already ready to head back!!
